Barbara Mandell

After years of litigating a wide range of civil matters, Barbara has developed

the skills and experience that allow her to bring a unique perspective to

mediation. Through the wide spectrum of Barbara’s experience, she has developed the technical skills to understand the legal and factual issues necessary to get a case resolved. Additionally, because of her many years spent counseling insurance carriers, and litigating both first and third-party insurance coverage and bad faith suits, Barbara has a real understanding of the insurance issues that frequently drive settlements.

After graduating from Loyola Law School, Barbara went on to work for a leading Los Angeles based defense firm, and later, a national commercial insurance company, before ultimately forming her own law firm, which she managed and where she practiced for over 15 years. But by then Barbara’s aptitude and interest in negotiating had firmly taken hold, and she sought formal training at the Pepperdine Law School, Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution, completing the “Mediating the Litigated Case” program in 2019. While the pandemic caused a bit of a delay in her plan to become a full-time mediator, Barbara has now retired from practicing law, and is committed to building a productive and successful mediation practice.

The core values of preparation, focus, and persistence, developed over 40 years of litigating are at the heart of the process utilized at Mandell Mediation. With a real knack for connecting with people, and an understanding of both the practical challenges to settlement, and the cost-benefit analysis that makes settlement almost always preferable to trial, Barbara will work tirelessly to help you reach a successful outcome.

Barbara’s Approach

After more than 40 years defending insurance carriers, individuals and businesses, trying cases, and mediating hundreds of cases to a resolution, Barbara has learned that with very few exceptions, a negotiated settlement is almost always preferable to rolling the dice at trial. That passion for finding the best possible resolution is at the heart of her approach to the mediation process.

Barbara approaches every mediation with the understanding that a good mediator does much more than simply shuttle between the parties to exchange offers. Regardless of the particulars of a case, everyone involved in a dispute has a point of view, which is frequently based on more than just money. Preparation in advance of the mediation, identifying the parties’ motivations, and really listening to their perspectives, with empathy and understanding is crucial to the process of helping the parties find their way to a resolution. Sometimes a case requires a creative solution to get past the bumps in the road to a resolution. Not a problem. Hard work and a determination to reach a settlement is what it takes to get it done. And at Mandell Mediation, we know how to get it done.

I highly recommend Barbara Mandell. She was the “go-to” trial lawyer for a major homeowners insurance carrier for decades before retiring. I first met her when she was breaking into mediation with Resolve Law LA and she managed to settle a pretty contested matter.
